Mainz is one of Germany´s oldest cities and is home of a university, a diocese and of several TV and radio broadcast stations. The carnival season plays a very important role and besides Cologne and Duesseldorf, Mainz is a stronghold. The Rhine Main area is a very important economical region in Europe and Frankfurt International airport plays a decisive role for the surrounding cities of Wiesbaden, Darmstadt and Frankfurt.
Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of printing with movable letters, lived in Mainz, and even today, visitors can admire two copies of the world famous Gutenberg Bible at the Gutenberg Museum. The Old Town with its narrow streets and half-timbered houses reflect the medieval and historical cityscape. The St. Martin´s Cathedral rises directly by the market. The construction of the cathedral started in the year 975 under Archbishop, and the church since then has experienced fire, destruction and reconstruction many times. The Romanesque chapel and the late Gothic cloister are additional architectural highlights. Another landmark is the Gothic hall church St. Stephen with its famous nine glass windows by the Jewish artist Marc Chagall.
The State Theatre Mainz has unique acoustics and outstanding well known ballet performances. Additional to numerous exhibitions and cultural events, once a year carnival reigns Mainz: Parties in the streets, carnival balls and the grand carnival street parade are among to the highlights.
The beautiful surroundings of Rheinhessen and Rheingau offer extensive possibilities for leisure activities. Winegrowers offer wine tastings and cozy restaurants provide typical food specialties. An exciting boat trip, passing castles and beautiful landscapes, guides you along the Upper Middle Rhine World Heritage.
